Lesson 1 / AI basics

Make AI your assistant, not your decision-maker.

AI can explain unfamiliar concepts, draft checklists, and help you learn a new interface. It can also confidently invent steps that don't exist. Treat it as a capable first draft that needs checking.

A reliable beginner workflow

  1. Describe the outcome. Example: “I want to build a simple website for my small business, and I am brand-new to domains.”
  2. Describe your level and constraints. Ask for one step at a time with plain-language explanations.
  3. Request a safety check. Ask which settings affect billing, domain ownership, email, privacy or public publishing.
  4. Verify against the real dashboard. Use official help pages; screenshots can help explain a page but should never expose a password, token or verification code.
  5. Save a short handoff. Record what changed, what did not, and the next single action.

Starter prompt you can adapt

“Help me set up a professional website for my business. I am a beginner. Ask only for essential information. Give one step at a time. Explain the purpose of each account and setting. Before anything that costs money, publishes content, moves a domain, or deletes data, tell me what it changes and how to verify it.”

What never goes into a chat

Passwords, one-time login codes, recovery keys, transfer authorization codes, API secrets, payment card numbers and confidential customer records.

Exercise: ask AI to compare a domain registrar, DNS service, and website hosting in three sentences, then explain each back in your own words.
